Joba to Start Year in The Pen

The most popular Yankee related topic this week is Clemens, but turn on ESPN or any news channel or webpage and you're guarenteed to find out all you need right away. Another significant Yankees topic is the Yankees have decided start 22 year old phenom Joba Chamberlain off in the bullpen setting up Mariano Rivera. Joba was virtually unhittable after being called up and becoming the set up man last year. He went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.38 while striking out 34 batters over 24 innings.

The Yankees are planning on keeping him in the set up man role for the first two months of the season. Then when June comes around, they would like to send him down to the minors for 3 weeks to start building his arm strength up so he can come back to his natural position as a starting pitcher. With young arms like Mark Prior, Fransico Liriano, and Felix Hernandez, just to name a few, having serious arm trouble at a young age it makes sense for the Yankees to be cautious with their prized arm.
